Isotone Sports drinks are drinks whose particle concentration corresponds to that of the blood. Scientific studies in recent years have shown, however, that drinks in which the particle concentration is lower than in the blood – so-called hypotonic Drinks – are better absorbed and tolerated. This is particularly beneficial before and during long endurance exercises and minimizes gastrointestinal problems.
Drinks such as fruit juices, energy or soft drinks whose particle concentration is higher than that of blood and thus has a higher osmotic pressure than blood are called hypertonic and are not suitable for sports. These drinks remove fluids from the body and are therefore often the cause of nausea or diarrhea during high levels of exertion. However, they can be used to quickly replenish carbohydrate stores AFTER exertion.
